Music at Harpeth
- Congregational Singing. Traditional favorites,
beloved gospel hymns and spirituals, contemporary Christian and praise
songs, and reverent and joyful liturgical songs all resound in our worship.
- Harpeth Choir. Teenagers and adults sing side
by side in this choir, which sings each week at the 10:30 a. m. service in
the Sanctuary. From time to time the choir also provides special music at
the 8:30 service. Musical styles range from Mozart to contemporary choral
music, with every stop in between. The Choir practices Wednesday nights from
7-8:30 p. m. and Sunday mornings from 10-10:30 a. m., with special sectional
and full rehearsals at other times.
- Men’s Ensemble and Women’s Ensemble. These
subsets of the choir often attract additional singers who are trying on
singing for size, or who love to sing but cannot commit to weekly rehearsal.
Repertoire includes lighter numbers, sometimes with instrumental
accompaniment. These groups usually practice 3 or 4 times and then
sing in worship.
- Joyeux Choieux. This joyfully-self-named and
nearly-impossible-to-pronounce-or-spell group is composed of 4th
to 6th graders, and sings several times a year in worship at both
services. A highlight of each spring is their musical play presented as part
of regular morning worship. The Joyeux practice on Wednesday afternoons from
4-5 p. m.
- Harpeth Handbells. An ensemble of a dozen or so
teenage and adult ringers who practice on a “project basis”, getting
together several times, often on Saturday mornings, and then performing in
both worship services as Special Music. A sense of humor and some facility
with reading music are assets in this group.
- Harpeth Youth Brass Ensemble. Composed of
middle school and high school players, this group plays several times a year
in regular worship services, and practices on an as-needed basis.
- Special Music from Within Our Church. We are
richly blessed with talented singers and instrumentalists in the
congregation who offer their praise and thanksgiving to God in the form of
Special Music during the early and late services. Everyone from young
pianists to singer-songwriters, amateur and professional guitarists, a
stand-up bassist and vocal soloists share their love of music in our
worship. Our ministers of music add piano and organ solos and duets to the
mix.
- Special Musical Guests. We love our special
musicians from the community who bring high professional standards and
inspiring music performances to our worship. They also serve as valued role
models for our children, youth and adults musicians.
- High Holy Days for Music. Special music times
at Harpeth include the Joy Gift Service during Advent, Palm Sunday,
the Tenebrae Service during Holy Week, Easter, the Outdoor
Bluegrass Service, usually in May. Our Summer Combined Services
in the Sanctuary are a kind of High Holy Season, as the full congregation
from both winter services makes music all together at the same time in the
Sanctuary.
